writer-based prose

Dear all,

Linda Flower described the writer-based prose as a process for writers writing for themselves. The writers write stories from their nature and own thoughts without thinking of whether readers want to read their stories or not. They can write and express their ideas in what they really want. They use their own function, structure and style in their writing. As far as I understand this kind of process is only suitable for expressive writing, not transactional writing, and is always used to teach students in writing courses. The process is important to help writers express their ideas about a subject.

Flower also compared the writer-based prose with the reader-based prose. The writer described that the reader-based prose is a process to communicate something to a reader. For this writing style, a writer gives immense importance to a reader. He or she will use a shared language and shared context between writers and readers so that readers will understand the stories clearly. In my opinion, I understand that the reader-based prose is much more difficult than the writer –based prose as each writer must know ways how to transform complex ideas and difficult words into simple ones to make readers understand easier. Beside writers must have ability to narrate the stories as well.

Writer-Based Prose

Dear all,

This article talks about writing style as based prose. The one is “writer-based prose”, the auther, Linda Flower (1979), explain that “[it] is a verbal expression written by a writer to himself and for himself …” I realize that it like expressive writing because I often used this writing as my essay or my work. I sometimes think this writing makes reader don’t understand my essay. In other words, this writing fails to communicate to the reader because I write for myself.

On the contrary, the other is “reader-based prose”, the auther inform that “[it] is deliberate attempt to communicate something to a reader. [It] creates a shared language and shared between writer and reader.” (p.62) I realize “reader-based prose” could help the reader to clear understand.

Moreover, she talks about inner speech, egocentrism and semantic memory. She offers a case study of a transformation. She informs that “[a]s the case study shows, the concept of trying to transform Writer-based prose for a reader is by itself a powerful tool. It helps writers identify the lineaments of a problem many can start to solve once they recognize it as a definable problem.” (p.69)

As for function, structure and style of writer-based prose, the auther hold the theory and viewpoints according to Piaget and Vygotsky.

Finally, I agree with the sentence that “[a]lthough Writer-based prose often fails for readers and tends to preclude further concept formation[;] it may be a useful road into the creative process for some writers.”

Thanks
Best regards,
Jib

Writer-Based Prose

The point of writer-based prose is process reflecting idea of a writer, while reader-based prose is a attempt to communication to a reader.

For my opinion, the both theory is important idea for writing. If we can melt theories to the one; It will be useful. When I write eassay, the first step I think that what the words or meaning that I want to express. The reader is not the main factor that I take to consideration. Sometime the reader can not understand my essay, becuase my expression is the result of my own understanding. That is a wrong way, becuase the good writting that the reader can understand the expression as well as the writer. Reader-Based prose is the theory that help me to develop my writing. I think that the expression is as important as trying to communicate ideas to the the reader.

Writer-Based Prose

I think this article is so deep in detail; I mean I didnt think that in writing study, we should learn about something that is so detailed as writer-based prose.

Writer-based prose is compared with a child narrative. Children communicate with inner speech and egocentrism which is not selfishness. Writer-based prose is like a first draft of every writing, especially the first draft of expressive writing, which the writers communicate with themself. On the other hand, Reader-Based prose is a deliberate attempt to communicate something with a reader.

Writer-Based Prose

This paper is good because it makes me knows the difference between writer and reader based prose. Sometimes, I don't know that I write same writer-based prose because it is natural.

Writer-based prose is writing without focus point and writer don't organize idea. It makes reader don't understand writer's work. I think it calls that expressive writing. I agree with a sentence is "writer-based prose is natural and adequate for a writer writing to himself or herself" (p.62 ) because when I write essays, I try to tell myself that I have to write work for everybody read but I lack to focus point or missing issue.

Reader-based prose is writing to hold reader and create understanding about writer's work. It makes writing is clear. It calls that transactional writing.

This paper talk about inner speech and egocentrism. I think it is an obstacle or problem because it makes writing is difficult. I think a good writing is understanding of others or reader when read work and clearing of the iceberg.
