Recently, I have read an interesting short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner”. I was impressed on characters in the story. Today I will tell all about them for you.
“The Rocking-Horse Winner” is the story of a boy’s gift for picking the winners in horse races. An omniscient narrator relates the tale of a boy whose family is always shortage of money. His mother is incapable of showing love and is obsessed with the status that material wealth can provide. Her son is acutely aware of his mother’s desire for money, and he is motivated to take action. He wants to help her, but he also wants to silence the voice that haunts him, the voice of the house itself whispering, “There must be more money! There must be more money!”
My favorite characters are Paul and Paul’s mother
Paul is a boy who can understand other person’s feeling well especially her mother. Although he is the boy, he pays attention to his family’s circumstances. We can perceive these special things about him from a part of the story. When he asks his mother that “Mother, why don’t we always use uncle’s or else a taxi?” and his mother answers that “Because we’re the poor members of the family.” And “It because your father has no luck.” This can show that he tries to know about a cause of the family’s problem. And he also tries to resolve the problem with reaching where there is luck. We can learn many value things from Paul. For example, “He often sits on his big rocking-horse, charging madly into space, riding toward.” Because he knows the horse can take him to where there is luck, if he only forces it. This can demonstrate that if we have aims in our life, we should have perseverance to control ourselves to achieve the aims.
Paul’s mother is a good mother; she loves her children very much that she and her children can read it in each other’s eyes. Although her family is always the feeling of a shortage of money, she never reproaches her husband that stays in a state of the head of family. We can perceive these special things about her from a part of the story. When she worries that her children are going up. They will have to go to school. So, she tries to find a way to make more money for her children’s happiness. When her son asks that “Mother, why don’t we always use uncle’s or else a taxi?” and his mother answers that “Because we’re the poor members of the family. I suppose, it’s because your father has no luck.” This can show that she never reproves her husband that he can’t make money enough for expenses in the family but she thinks her husband has no luck. And we can learn many value things from her. For example, “Yet she has no luck. She marries for love and the love turns to dust.” This can show that people should concede several things that have happened in their life because these good or bad things, partly occurs from their own decisions. People should do their own duties with intention like mother’s Paul that seriously tries to do a duty of a good mother.
In my opinion, the valuable message of the story is people can have hopes and dreams but they shouldn’t release these things control their own mind being preoccupied with money and stay to conduct in a bad way; because it may cause a bad result to them later.
Let’s find deep impression from the story!!!
