TOEFL, test of English as a Foreign Language, I think you may know or some of you may take the test before. Today, I’ll talk about a tactic for TOEFL’s speaking section used by Xie Jinzheng, a teacher at a test preparation institute for his students who aim for studying in US colleges. Xie has taught the oral section of TOEFL for three years. Also, he has taken the test for six times and he studied on websites that Chinese students share test questions. From his test and study, he found that TOEFL’s speaking section can be categorized into “people, places and events”. He then designed patterns for speaking test in order that his students can remember and recite those patterns in response to any question. For instance, if a question on “place” asks about their favourite park. Xie suggests the response: “You know, there is a river in the park. After dinner, I want to walk along the bank, and the breath of fresh air can really refresh my mind.” And if students are questioned about their favourite restaurant, they will apply the tactic of speech pattern to say, “You know, there is a river next to the café. After a cup of coffee, I want to walk along the bank and the breath of fresh air can really refresh my mind.” For favourite country, “You know, I rent a house in the United States. Beside my house, there is a river. After dinner…” It’s quite the same pattern, right? This tactic makes his students’ scores rise on speaking section. And Xie says, “However, it is just for the test, not for life in USA.
In my view, for sure, TOEFL is as if the first pace to pursue dream to continue studying in the United States. In fact, those who are foreign students in US colleges will meet many different things in different places and cultures. Aim for passing the test for US university enrollment is not enough, they therefore have to aim for achieving a degree with good grade for promising future in their careers and lives.
