The Enchanted Castle

This is one of E. Nesbit novel that I like a lot. I first read it when I was eleven or twelve. I read it as a little kid and didn't understand half of it so I re-read it when I grew up and thought it was a great story.
There are these kids, and they find a castle, and a magic ring. At first they think it's an invisibility ring. Then, to their surprise, they find it can make inanimate objects come to life, or make you rich. After a while, they come to a truly startling conclusion: the ring can do anything at all!
How amazing that over 100 years later this story still enchants children and adults alike. The mix of magic with everyday life is brilliant. E. Nesbit is one of the greatest authors of all time. Nesbit doesn't create perfect little darlings, though her child characters are certainly likable and engaging--it's just that they seem to be actual people. I thought it started slow, but I was surprised that I really got into it and enjoyed it for what it was.

I loved this book. I liked it because it was funny and good. My favorite part of this book was when the servant put on the magic ring. That was really funny too. I liked how the kids met statues and discovered a magic ring and other magical things. I liked how in the end, everyone had a happy ending. ^___^

The Story of Amulet

The Story of Amulet is the third book in the Five Children. It is the last book of a trilogy set in England 100 years ago. The idea is very unique and has great potential. The third book is a very great ending. I love how Nesbit tied in the first two books into this last one. And she gave the children even more fun (and risky) adventures. In fact, the entire series progresses from small adventures to great daring ones. First they get to make a daily wish, then they ride on a magic carpet to places near and far... and finally, in this last book, they've traveled through time looking for the missing half of an amulet that will give them their hearts' desire.

Overall, this trilogy enchanted me. I think it'd be so awesome to wish for things from a sand fairy, or ride with a phoenix on a magic carpet, or go back in time to Ancient Egypt. I think this one works better if you know more about history, as it is all time travel to ancient Egypt and Babylonia and that sort of thing. The children spend a lot of time in desert locales of the past (Babylon, Ancient Egypt) and Nesbit does really good job with the descriptions of place.

I really love this whole series by E Nesbit. I remember first reading them all: Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet and this one, when I was pretty young. They all have lots of great and magical adventures that 5 siblings experience. And even though they were written in the early 1900's, I feel like they still hold up well and still seem almost "modern" in a way.
I truly love this series, and I'm glad I read it. And now I can see that Nesbit's writing has influenced a lot of my favorite children's book authors - particularly JK Rowling and Diana Wynne Jones.

"Time is but a mode of thought" is my favorite quote and came from this book.  Recommended!

The Phoenix and the Carpet

The Phoenix and the Carpet is the second in a trilogy. The first is The Five Children and It. It tells the adventures of four children (sometimes five) who face the consequences of the many choices they make. In this book they find a magic phoenix and a carpet that take them on adventures when they make a wish.
I decided to continue reading this trilogy of books. I do have to admit I place this second book higher than the first, but it was too much of the same for me. The kids once again have this incredible opportunity to have a magic carpet take them wherever they want, but they bicker so much they never get to go anywhere interesting. Any children like that would've taken advantage of the opportunity, even if they had to say each of them got to decide where to go on a certain day. Again, such great potential with this story, but just left me thinking what a waste of a fantastical opportunity.
This book was written in England in 1904 so some of the language is different than we are used to. This book had some funny parts, but some parts were kind of odd and it dragged a little between adventures. Anyway, this was one of my favorite books as a kid. I enjoy E. Nesbit's writing; she is so clever and entertaining.

Recommended for anyone, you know who love fantasy books.  ^_^

Five Children and It

Do you ever imagine what you would do if you were suddenly granted three magic wishes? How would you go about it? Would you plan your requests carefully or would your wishes just come tumbling out. Do you think you would be able to cope if something went unexpectedly wrong?
Well, this is quite an old story about old-fashioned children who go out to play one day in the old gravel pits and come across a sand fairy. At least, they call him a sand fairy.
Five children (thus the first part of the title of this book—although one of the five kids is a baby and is not involved in all of the events) leave their London home with their mother visit the countryside for a week. Within hours of their arrival they discover an ancient sand fairy living in a gravel-pit. The grumpy fairy grants the children one wish each day. Well, as you can imagine, the children are very excited and don't hesitate to test their talking, walking wish-machine. Unfortunately, none of the wishes go as the kids hope and quite a few cause more trouble then they solve and "careful what you wish for" becomes a much more colorful aphorism.
The catch? The wishes only last one day and the kids never quite get what they expect.
This book was written over 100 years ago by E. Nesbit, so you'll notice that the language a bit old-fashioned. . I had some trouble understanding the British currency, but other than that I think I understood it well. The book is both funny and witty. The dialog is sharp and all of the human characters behave in realistic ways. I loved E Nesbit as a child; I read everything of hers I could get my hands on. This was a particular favorite.
This book was great. I really liked this book. I reccomend to all

If you enjoy this book. you may also enjoy E. Nesbitís "The Railway Children", another classic, which was later turned into a movie.

What would you wish for if you met a sand fairy? Read the book and think about it!

Could do with

Today I have an idiom that is interesting.

This idiom is formed with three easy words which are ‘could’, ‘do’, and ‘with’. I will analyze a separate meaning before we will talk about idiom meaning.

Start with ‘could’, which is auxiliary verb, and have two main task, are,

1. Past Simple of ‘can’, for example,

- “When I was a teen, I could run 10 kilometers.” (shown that I’m not teen now and I can't run 10 kilometers anymore)

2. Used as a more polite form of ‘can’ when asking someone to provide something or do something, as follow,

- Excuse me, could I light up here?

Then, ‘do’ which the most familiar meaning is ‘to act or take action’, such as, do business, do wrong, do training and do painting.

And the last, 'with' that means together; with.

After that, if combine all three words together, it will not mean ‘able to do with’. Well…What does it mean? Let’s guess it! I will give you a hint below.

1. It's really hot. I could do with a nice cool drink.

2. The exam is round the corner. We could do with a good tutor to help us.

Do you know those sentences meaning?

The answer of the idiom ‘could do with’ means ‘want’. Somebody right? I will point the main notice for you.

1. This idiom will use auxiliary verb ‘could’ only, it cannot replace by another word that is similarly meaning such as ‘can’ or ‘be able to’. So, the two sentences below are fault.

- “I can do with a cup of tea.” The true is “I could do with a cup of tea.” means “I would like a cup of tea?”

- “I am able to do with a comic book.” The true is “I could do with a comic book.” means “I would like a comic book.”

2. This idiom use in the present tense only. If use it in the past, you have to use in past tense of ‘want’ which is ‘wanted’, for example,

- Yesterday was really hot. I wanted a nice cool drink.

- At the end of term when the exam was round the corner, we wanted a good tutor to help us.
