Chapter 1 … The Chocolate’s History

Do you love Chocolate???

I am a person who loves Chocolate. Someday when I ate Milk Chocolate, I want to know about the History of Chocolate. So I searched and translated this information from Thai to English then I want to share it to everyone. I will divide into three chapters because it has more information and this blog is chapter one. Let’s know more about Chocolate!!!


Chocolate is a produce food from the seed of the tropical cacao tree. It is an ingredient of many desserts such as ice-cream, candy, cookie, cake and pie. It is looked upon as a love sweet of people around the world.  

Chocolate is made by fermented, roasted and crushed the cocoa seed which come from the tropical cacao tree – origin in Central America and Mexico. The cacao tree was discovered by Indians and Aztecs. And now it is broadly grown around the tropical area. The cocoa seed has more acerbity. It was known “chocolate” or “cocoa”.

Moreover, the cocoa seed can make for beverage as hot chocolate. This beverage was made by Aztecs, Indians and Europeans.

The History of Chocolate

Chocolate was discovered for two thousand years ago, after the period of Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. It is produced from the seeds of the cacao tree in the tropical forest of America. Chocolate was form into Theobroma cacao group – it means the food of the gods.

The first people known to discover chocolate were ancient civilization in Mexico and Central America - Mayans and Aztecs. They were crushed and mixed the cacao seeds with many ingredients for made the beverages which have bitter taste. In addition to use for made the foods, chocolate was used for the way of life in religion and social.

The Mayans - 250-900 A.D. – was the first people who have the archaeological evidence that they were discovered the secret of the cacao. They bring it from rainforest and grown at their backyard. After that, the seeds were used to fermented, roasted and crushed. If they wanted to make the beverage, they mixed with water, chili pepper and maize flour. The chocolate beverage had a good taste and full of the foamy.

In 1400 A.D., the Aztec empire took over a majority part of Mesoamerica. The Aztec people traded the cacao seeds with Mayans and other. They often needed the conquered people pay for their tribute by used the cacao seeds—a form of Aztec money. The Aztecs loved to drink chocolate like first period Mayans and mixed it with spices. But the Mesoamericans was not mixed with sugar because the sugar cane was not grown.

There are story about the classic Mayans liked to drink chocolate in special occasion while the price or princess drank it all occasions. For the Aztecs, the grand duke, monk, high soldier and merchant can drank this holy beverage only. The chocolate was an important part of royal ceremony and religion because they used the cacao seeds to worship the god and drank in important ceremony.  

When 4,000 years ago, the Aztecs believed that “the cocoa seed is a food which the gods given for clear the way to the heaven”. That is a cause they used the cocoa seeds to make the beverage. Then, Hernando Cortez, the Spanish explorer, found the Aztecs. He lived with them and drank chocolate water together. He bring the cocoa seeds back to his country for make the beverage and flavor to sweet, that was very popular in Spain. At least, Conrad J. Van Houten, Dutch, was discovered the procedure chocolate bar, pellet and powder.  

 Now, we know more about Chocolate’s history and in next chapter I will tell you about the types of Chocolate, there are 9 types of Chocolate.
